ABOUT ME

4me4you visited Pilar Corrias to explore Perpetual Motion Machines,

MY PROCESS

a thought-provoking group exhibition featuring the dynamic works of five groundbreaking artists: Pacita Abad, Loie Hollowell, Christina Quarles, Tschabalala Self, and Mickalene Thomas.

“Perpetual Motion Machines”.

  • The exhibition draws its conceptual framework from the notion of a perpetual motion machine,  an imagined mechanism capable of generating endless energy without any external force. Though impossible in scientific terms, the idea becomes a powerful metaphor for the relentless creative force, vitality, and expressive depth that defines the works on view.

  • Each artist approaches the theme through a distinct visual language, blending movement and stillness in ways that stretch the boundaries of painting. Pacita Abad’s richly textured surfaces, layered with colour and materials, create a rhythmic energy that radiates from the canvas.

  • Loie Hollowell’s abstract, body-centric forms invite quiet contemplation while evoking a charged spatial tension. Christina Quarles’s fluid, entangled figures blur the line between body and background, exploring identity through motion and distortion. Tschabalala Self builds vibrant, collage-like scenes that celebrate the form and presence of Black women, while Mickalene Thomas injects her portraits with glamour, history, and power, layering textures and narratives to dazzling effect.

  • What binds these artists together is not just their exploration of movement, but their shared ability to generate energy—emotionally, politically, and conceptually—within their work. Their paintings vibrate with life. They do not simply depict; they provoke, resonate, and unfold across time and culture. The exhibition becomes a space where still images move, where quiet surfaces speak, and where each work hums with unceasing momentum.
  • Perpetual Motion Machines is more than a title—it’s a challenge to reimagine painting as a living, breathing force. In these works, the canvas is no longer static but alive with possibility, echoing the pulse of lived experience and unending creative drive.
