“Materiality“

  • What really stands out is that the materials aren’t simply there to support an image or an idea, they are part of the story. Glass, metal, plastic, textiles, thread and paper sit alongside found, salvaged and industrial materials, each taking on a life of its own. Their qualities, fragile, heavy, transparent, soft, rough or resilient, become an important part of how we experience each work.

  • There is something particularly satisfying about seeing the process left visible, too. Cutting, stitching, burning, breaking, layering, weaving and assembling are all part of the finished pieces, giving us a sense of the time, effort and experimentation that went into making them.

  • Everyday materials that we might normally overlook are transformed into something unexpected, often making us see them in a completely different way.

  • For us, this is what makes Materiality so engaging. At a time when so much of what we see and experience is increasingly digital, the exhibition brings us back to something physical and tangible. You can almost imagine the weight of the metal, the delicacy of the glass, the softness of the textiles and the texture of the different surfaces.

  • The exhibition encourages us to look beyond what an artwork represents and think instead about what it is actually made from, and why that choice matters. Here, material isn’t simply a medium; it becomes part of the artist’s language.
