ABOUT ME

Central Saint Martins bore witness to the emergence of a visionary designer who would go on to reshape the landscape of fashion – Giles Deacon.

PROCESS

Giles Deacon's debut onto the fashion scene was nothing short of spectacular. The turning point came in 2004 when he unveiled his Autumn/Winter collection under his eponymous label, Giles.

This inaugural showcase left an indelible mark, showcasing Deacon's distinctive style characterised by nature references and captivating prints. The sheer brilliance of his graduating collection caught the attention of none other than the iconic Tom Ford, paving the way for a pivotal meeting that would alter the trajectory of Deacon's career.

Following this encounter, Deacon found himself in the heart of the fashion capitals, Paris and Milan, where he assumed key roles with renowned fashion houses. However, it was in 2000 that he secured a highly coveted position as the head designer at Bottega Veneta, collaborating with stylist Katie Grand. The debut collection under his leadership, featuring a bold palette of white, metallics, and neon, propelled the reputation of the house to new heights. Shortly thereafter, Deacon’s prowess was acknowledged once more as he assumed a position designing for the iconic Gucci brand.

While his roles with prestigious fashion houses added layers to his portfolio, Giles Deacon continued to express his unique aesthetic through his eponymous collection. In contrast to the edgier designs seen in his work with major brands, the Giles line mirrored his personal tastes, offering a style that was less confrontational yet equally captivating. The enduring collaboration with stylist Katie Grand underscored the synergy of their creative visions.

Deacon’s artistic journey extended beyond the realm of fashion as he cultivated partnerships with notable talents. Working closely with illustrator and textile designer Rory Crichton, as well as British weavers Stephen Walters and Sons, Deacon demonstrated a commitment to craftsmanship and innovation.

Recognition for his contributions to the fashion world came in 2009 when Giles Deacon was awarded the prestigious ANDAM prize. Subsequently, he elevated his global presence by showcasing his collections on the Paris catwalk starting from the Spring/Summer 2010 season.

The year 2010 marked a significant chapter in Deacon’s career as he assumed the role of creative director for the iconic label Emanuel Ungaro. However, this tenure was relatively short-lived, as he departed from the position in 2011, leaving an imprint on the brand’s legacy.

Giles Deacon’s narrative in the world of fashion is one defined by creativity, innovation, and a relentless pursuit of artistic expression. As we delve deeper into his remarkable journey, we uncover the layers of influence, collaboration, and bold design choices that have shaped the trajectory of this visionary designer.
