4me4you recently had the pleasure of visiting the Rhodes Contemporary Gallery, where the captivating work of artist Yool Kim was on display.
MY PROCESS
Working in a symbolic and figurative style, Kim blends human figures, swans, and floral motifs in a vibrant array of colours. Each element carries rich significance, symbolising difference, coexistence, and equality.
Kim’s latest series invites viewers to reflect on the profound longing for a time when human connection was deeper, when our bonds, both physical and emotional, were felt more intensely. “This series captures the longing for a time when we shared everything, when we were deeply connected in both body and soul,” Kim explains. “It reflects not only the warmth of human connection but also the emotional bond we once had with all living beings.”
In Kim’s vision, no being is seen as superior; rather, every creature shares equally in a nurturing and protective environment. The recurring presence of swans and plants serves as a gentle reminder of the beauty that flourishes when diversity is celebrated rather than divided
The result is a fluid sense of self, one that speaks to the ever-evolving nature of our experiences. Rich with spiritual energy and symbolism, Kim’s work conjures its own modern folklore, inviting viewers to explore their own emotional landscapes.
“Despite complexity and confusion, what remains is warmth, the tenderness of being together,” Kim reflects.
With relaxed postures and embracing poses, her figures convey a deep sense of longing, memory, warmth, and compassion.
The varied gazes of her figures, directed in different ways, hint at emotional instability and uncertain times; yet, the overarching sentiment is one of connection, hope, and the enduring power of shared humanity.
