ABOUT ME

4me4you recently visited Unit London Gallery to experience the work of South African artist Sthenjwa Luthuli.

MY PROCESS

"The omission of faces is a conscious attempt to prevent anachronism when conveying ancestral oral histories, shielding them from the excess and distortion of today’s image-saturated culture."

Luthuli’s artistic voice confronts the ongoing restrictions imposed on ethnic minorities in South Africa. His work speaks to a reality where many lives are still defined by control—by being told what to do, how to do it, and under what conditions.

  • Central to his practice are pattern, texture, and design—elements that carry both aesthetic and metaphorical weight. His compositions shimmer and shift under the viewer’s gaze, their surfaces alive with movement. Notably, his figures are headless, a poignant symbol of the link between education and liberation. These anonymous bodies are bound by circumstance, their autonomy eroded by systemic oppression and a failing social infrastructure.

  • Luthuli works primarily with 12mm MDF Super Wood, cut to various sizes. Using traditional tools—a chisel and mallet—he carves directly into the wood, transforming it into a sculptural canvas. Onto this surface, he paints his figures, each one embodying a life constrained by limited opportunity. His method draws on the deep roots of African sculptural traditions, which have long embraced wood and other natural materials. Yet while anchored in heritage, his work adopts a contemporary visual language, bridging past and present.

  • Through this dialogue between tradition and modernity, Luthuli invites reflection on history while offering a sense of hope. His art becomes a vessel for education and empowerment, aiming to inspire younger generations toward change and possibility.
