4me4you recently had the pleasure of visiting Stolen Space Gallery, where the spotlight was on the artist Shigeki Matsuyama and his exhibition "PORTRAIT OF DAZZLE."
MY PROCESS
Matsuyama’s unique approach involves placing eyes onto the silhouettes of different people, varying in race, sex, hairstyle, and body shape from the original subjects.
This technique creates portraits that reflect anonymity and highlight the uncertain veracity of information on the Internet.
‘PORTRAIT OF DAZZLE’.
Shigeki Matsuyama, a multimedia artist based in Kanagawa, Japan, has a background in product illustration and advertising.
Following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, he held a solo exhibition titled “UNEASINESS” in Tokyo.
The success of this exhibition fuelled his passion for creating conceptual works that examine the influence of modern media on self-image and trust.
Matsuyama’s work delves into the intriguing, yet slightly unsettling, inconspicuousness of the virtual world.
Inspired by everyday life, his use of dazzle camouflage—a nod to the ship camouflage from World War I—transforms his subjects into something otherworldly, reflecting his fascination with the impact of today’s media on contemporary society.
