Artist: J. Carino

4me4you recently delved into the evocative works of artist J. Carino, showcased at the PM/AM Gallery. Carino's art explores the intricate relationships between the human body, natural landscapes, and the enduring threads of mythology and symbolism.

MY PROCESS

His work, characterised by vivid portrayals of nude figures within lush, natural settings, seeks to reclaim physical and historical spaces that have long been marginalised, particularly within the context of queer identity.

Main Body: J. Carino’s paintings are a vibrant expression of defiance and celebration, using colour as a powerful tool to highlight and elevate queer voices.

Through expressive depictions of bodies and their natural environments, Carino’s work navigates the personal and political complexities of identity, transforming them into a radiant and vital aesthetic. His paintings often feature bodies that are exaggerated, embodying strength and defiance, and transcending the boundaries of reality to enter a mythological realm where human forms become malleable and otherworldly.

The intertwining of subject and landscape in Carino’s work creates a metaphysical symbiosis, where the essence of the body merges seamlessly with the natural world. This supernatural quality invites viewers into a transcendental space where the boundaries between the human and the environment blur, raising questions about the interconnectedness of our existence.

Carino’s approach is deeply rooted in his personal history, having grown up in the vast landscapes of Colorado. This influence is evident in his work, which contrasts the wild expanses of nature with the cultivated, restricted spaces of urban environments like London. His paintings, based on drawings of himself, models, and friends, challenge traditional representations of the human form and environment, offering a more fluid and imaginative interpretation.
