4me4you recently had the pleasure of visiting Stolen Space Gallery, which featured the artist Diogo Machado, also known as “Add Fuel.”

MY PROCESS

Add Fuel is a Portuguese visual artist, Diogo Machado, who lives and works in Portugal. Starting out under the moniker Add Fuel to the Fire, Machado drew inspiration from sci-fi, video games, comics, and urban visual culture to create a distinctive visual universe populated by uniquely eccentric creatures.

‘SIMPLY SQUARES’

Add Fuel’s approach provides a fresh perspective on blending tradition with innovation, inviting audiences to explore a world where simplicity meets complexity and every square harbors a story waiting to be discovered.

In 2008, he shortened his moniker to Add Fuel and began to focus his work on tile design, examining traditional Portuguese azulejo tiles.

By reinterpreting these classic tin-glazed tiles, Diogo builds layered compositions to create a world filled with original motifs and characters brimming with emotion. His work spans drawing, painting, printing, murals, and ceramics, blending traditional tile design with contemporary visual references to prompt a dialogue between the classic and the contemporary.

“Simply Squares” encapsulates a profound reverence for tradition, seamlessly intertwined with a sensitivity to contemporary urban landscapes.

In this exhibition, Diogo aims to take viewers on a captivating journey through the intricate interplay of geometric shapes and patterns, with each square serving as a microcosm of artistic expression.
