4me4you Visits D*Face – New World Disorder, StolenSpace Gallery, 2013

MY PROCESS

In 2013, 4me4you visited D*Face’s New World Disorder at StolenSpace Gallery, a show that captured an important moment for both the artist and London’s street-art scene.

D*Face, the alias of London artist Dean Stockton, was already a major figure in the city’s street-art movement. As part of the Finders Keepers crew, he helped shape Shoreditch and Brick Lane into internationally recognised centres for urban art and culture.
New World Disorder was his first London solo show in five years, bringing together seven years of work influenced by chaos, loss, conflict and social uncertainty.

A central theme of the show was the story of Pat Tillman, the American football player who left his career to join the US military and was killed in Afghanistan in 2004. D*Face used this story to explore ideas of heroism, patriotism, sport, war and loss.

The gallery floor was transformed into an American football field, with bullet-damaged helmets, baseball bats covered in pop-art colours and military imagery, and dog tags replaced by D*Face’s signature wing pendants.

For 4me4you, New World Disorder was more than a street-art exhibition. It documented a moment of change for D*Face, StolenSpace and the wider creative community that had helped make Brick Lane and Shoreditch such influential parts of London’s art scene.
