4me4you recently had the opportunity to visit Gillian Jason Gallery, where we explored the captivating works of Colette LaVette in her latest solo exhibition,“JUGULAR”.

MY PROCESS

In her latest series, Colette LaVette delves into the delicate interplay between human vulnerability and strength, framing this exploration through the rhythms and symbols of the natural world.

“JUGULAR”.

At the centre of this body of work lies a potent motif: the jugular—simultaneously one of the body’s most vital and most exposed points—becoming a site of inquiry into what it means to be both fragile and powerful.

LaVette’s paintings move beyond the figurative, opening a dialogue between the emotional and the elemental.

Memory, instinct, and the surrounding environment converge in works where nature is not merely scenic but participatory—an active force mirroring our inner contradictions. Each canvas offers a threshold into a liminal space, where vulnerability does not negate strength but instead reveals it.

With a language rooted in texture and layered colour, LaVette constructs a visual syntax that is both deeply personal and widely resonant. Her use of material feels at once intuitive and intentional, creating surfaces that pulse with tension and tenderness, concealment and revelation.

This quiet urgency draws the viewer in, inviting reflection not just on the physical body, but on the emotional and psychological states it carries.
