4me4you features ‘ROSES, HORSES AND THE GETTING OF WISDOM’.
ABOUT ME
4me4you recently had the delightful opportunity to visit Rhodes Contemporary Art Gallery, where the spotlight shone on the talented artist Ces McCully.
PROCESS
Ces McCully delves into themes of female relationships and identity using minimalistic forms, geometric compositions, and recurring motifs.
In her typographic pieces, McCully employs vibrant colours to craft stylised, geometric text artworks, revealing intimate, sometimes brutally honest thoughts. Recently, she has begun incorporating folk-like elements into her work, integrating religious symbols and human figures into her paintings.
McCully is fascinated by the interplay of shapes and the significance of negative space in storytelling. Through the harmonious arrangement of simple forms and soothing hues, she seeks to capture the essence of understated beauty. Her abstract paintings, reminiscent of fabric patterns, boast serene and contemplative compositions.
In McCully’s paintings, figures are depicted with square bodies and block-like features, often framed by triangular designs. Red tulips frequently appear as a motif, symbolising passion, new beginnings, and feminine allure, further emphasising her exploration of female relationships.
Employing flattened perspectives, McCully’s scenes evoke a sense of depth akin to woven tapestries. The flattened nature of her pieces allows her to embrace their surreal quality, recognisable as moments yet infused with patterns and symbols. Drawing inspiration from Byzantine iconography, folklore, and early video game graphics, these figurative elements converge to create captivating compositions.
