ABOUT ME

Recently, I had the opportunity to visit RHODES Contemporary Gallery for an unforgettable exhibition titled Body Language, featuring the work of contemporary abstract artist Cat Spilman.

MY PROCESS

Known for her distinct blend of textures and bold brushstrokes, Spilman’s latest collection offers a dynamic exploration of movement, form, and personal expression.

"Body Language"

  • Spilman, originally from New York, has long been celebrated for her monochromatic, two-tone paintings, which she creates using house paint, a medium she became familiar with during her eight-year career as a Scenic Artist in film and television.

  • Her work has always been appreciated for its raw energy and tactile surfaces. However, Body Language marks a pivotal moment in Spilman’s artistic evolution, as she returns to her signature restrained palette, while expanding the role of colour and embracing more fluid forms.

  • The exhibition is deeply introspective, acting as a meditation on Spilman’s personal and professional growth, both of which have evolved in tandem.

  • Despite the abstract nature of her work, Spilman describes her pieces as autobiographical, with each brushstroke capturing the essence of the human body rather than its literal form.

  • The sweeping, fluid gestures and bold movements evoke a sense of life, stretching far beyond the canvas.

  • While the abstract compositions remain a key feature, Body Language introduces colour as a central element.

  • Spilman reflects on her creative journey, stating: “I’ve spent years building an ‘alphabet’ of shapes and forms. Now I finally feel like I know my alphabet well enough to start making words.

  • In this exhibition, Spilman demonstrates her mastery over these “words,” creating a compelling dialogue between her past work and her evolving artistic vision.
