MY PROCESS
Using a variety of mediums—including pencil drawing, acrylic painting, ink, and dry pastel—Pueo captures not only the external features of her subjects but also the deeper questions surrounding femininity, identity, and perception.
Carole Pueo: Exploring the Mythology of the Everyday through Female Portraiture.
Born in 1973 in Trévoux, France, Carole Pueo now lives and works in Burgundy, where she devotes her artistic practice to the female portrait.
Her work is richly layered with diverse influences, ranging from cinematic stills and fashion photography to art history and pop culture. References to iconic artworks—such as Klimt’s The Kiss, Magritte’s The Lovers, or Escher’s paradoxical motifs—often appear in the form of tattoos or T-shirts worn by her subjects, blending the classical with the contemporary.
Music also plays a significant role, with certain pieces inspired directly by lyrics or the personas of musical icons.
Pueo describes her fascination with “a little mythology of everyday life”—those fleeting, fragile moments that carry their own quiet poetry. Her portraits reflect this sensibility, imbuing ordinary scenes with a subtle sense of reverence and symbolism.
Central to her work is the theme of the gaze. There is the direct, sometimes defiant gaze of the women she portrays—a reflection of autonomy and inner strength. There is also the societal gaze that surrounds and shapes perceptions of women. Finally, there is our own gaze, as viewers interpreting the signs and symbols subtly embedded in each composition.
Through this complex interplay, Pueo invites us to reconsider the roles and representations of women in today’s world.
“I like the idea of a wink to the viewer,” she says, “a gesture that might provoke a question—or a smile—about our current society.”
