ABOUT ME

4me4you recently stopped by Rhodes Gallery to see It Ain’t About the Weather, a striking exhibition by artist Alexandria Couch.

MY PROCESS

Working across drawing, printmaking, and textile, Couch creates images that don’t offer easy answers. Her compositions often focus on figures of colour who seem to both emerge from and fade into richly layered surroundings. .

“It Ain’t About the Weather”.

  • In It Ain’t About the Weather, a new body of work that includes works on paper and woven tapestries, she pushes further into ideas of perception and how unstable an image can be.

  • Figures appear in fragments, sometimes dissolving into the background, other times coming forward. The body never feels fixed; instead, it’s constantly shifting between presence and absence, hinting at identity as something shaped and reshaped through experience and perception.

  • At its core, the exhibition reflects Couch’s thoughts on memory and how we tell our own stories. “In the record-keeping of my own life,” she writes, “I find myself to be quite the unreliable narrator… I am always alone, yet simultaneously in the company of multitudes.”

  • The title itself came from a conversation with a friend while she was making the work. For Couch, moving through memory, dreams, and the present means embracing a kind of multiplicity, being in more than one place at once.

  • The works capture the distortions that can come from that space, and quietly ask how much our perception shapes the way we see ourselves and others.
