ABOUT ME

MY PROCESS

In July 2013, 4me4you visited Stuart Shave/Modern Art Gallery in London to discover Tom of Finland: Preliminary Drawings, an exhibition offering a fascinating insight into the creative process of one of the most influential artists in the history of LGBTQ+ visual representation.

"Preliminary Drawings"

Artist: Tom of Finland
  • The exhibition brought together a collection of preparatory studies that revealed the artist’s working methods and the development of the distinctive imagery for which he became internationally renowned. These drawings were created as preliminary explorations for his highly finished illustrations, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate the artistic decisions, observations and technical skills behind his celebrated compositions.

  • Rather than concentrating solely on the finished illustrations, the exhibition allowed audiences to explore the foundations of Tom of Finland’s visual language through the immediacy and intimacy of his pencil drawings.

  • Born Touko Laaksonen in Kaarina, Finland, in 1920, Tom of Finland developed an unmistakable artistic identity that would have a lasting influence on international art, fashion, popular culture and LGBTQ+ representation.

  • His work became particularly recognised for its confident depictions of masculine identity, physical strength, individuality and male sexuality. Through his carefully constructed figures and distinctive visual style, he challenged conventional representations of masculinity and created imagery that resonated with generations of gay men.

  • At a time when homosexuality was widely marginalised and subject to social discrimination, his illustrations provided an alternative visual language through which gay identity, confidence and self-expression could be celebrated.

  • What makes Preliminary Drawings particularly interesting is the opportunity to examine the artist’s creative process before the completion of his more familiar, highly polished illustrations.

  • The pencil studies demonstrate his understanding of anatomy, proportion, gesture and composition. They also reveal how individual characters and poses were developed through drawing, experimentation and refinement

  • For visitors, the exhibition offered more than an opportunity to view a collection of historical artworks. It provided an intimate encounter with the artist’s imagination and the foundations of an influential visual legacy.

  • The 2013 exhibition held particular importance within the British art scene, as it represented the first solo exhibition of Tom of Finland’s work in Britain.

  • Its presentation at Stuart Shave/Modern Art helped bring greater attention to an artist whose work had already achieved international recognition and entered the permanent collections of prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

  • The exhibition was organised with the support of the Tom of Finland Foundation, an organisation dedicated to preserving and promoting the artist’s work and legacy

  • Looking back at this exhibition, its significance extends beyond the drawings themselves. It offers an opportunity to recognise how art can challenge social conventions, influence cultural identity and provide visibility to communities whose experiences have historically been underrepresented.

  • Tom of Finland’s work continues to occupy an important place in conversations surrounding artistic freedom, sexuality, masculinity and LGBTQ+ cultural history.

  • For 4me4you, revisiting this exhibition is also an opportunity to preserve an earlier moment in our editorial journey, bringing our original 2013 coverage to a new audience through 4me4you.org.

  • An exhibition that celebrated not only the finished image, but also the creative process, the artist’s vision and the enduring power of visual expression.
