Argentine visual artist Carolina Correa is now based in Florence, Italy, where her work brings together painting, fashion and portraiture. At the centre of her practice is a fascination with identity, self-expression and the human figure.
Correa studied Fashion Design at the University of Buenos Aires, and her background in fashion continues to influence the way she approaches painting. Her understanding of clothing, the body and personal style can be felt throughout her work. Working mainly with oil paint and a palette knife, she creates expressive portraits and figurative paintings filled with rich texture, vibrant colour and a strong sense of movement.
Her work explores the different ways we build and communicate our identity, through our bodies, the way we dress, beauty and the ways we choose to express ourselves. She is interested in the relationship between how we see ourselves and how we are seen by others. Ideas around femininity, migration and belonging also play an important role in her work, shaped in part by her own experience of moving between different cultures and places.
This interest in materials and identity also extends beyond painting through Pardal, her independent textile art project. Drawing on her fashion background, Correa experiments with textiles, craftsmanship and handmade processes, using fabric as another way to explore texture, form and the connection between art and everyday life.
Since moving to Florence, Correa has continued her studies in painting while developing her artistic practice in Italy. Her work has been exhibited in Italy and internationally. Alongside her own studio practice, she also teaches oil painting and palette knife techniques in Florence.
