Belgian photographer Wout Beel AKA “WalterCampanello”, has spent much of his career exploring light, texture, and the human figure through photography.
MY PROCESS
While Beel’s photographic work is grounded in the craft of photography and the physical act of looking, Campanello gives him a different kind of freedom. It’s a space where reality can be altered, imagined, and rebuilt from scratch, where photography becomes less about capturing what exists and more about creating something that could exist.
In recent years, he has taken that exploration in a new direction, stepping into the world of AI-generated imagery through his alter ego, Walter Campanello.
Working mainly with Midjourney and Photoshop, Campanello creates images that sit somewhere between fashion, fine art, and surreal storytelling. His characters and landscapes often feel strangely familiar, yet completely impossible: ...
...weathered faces framed by Elizabethan ruffs and mechanical headphones; cyborg women with the quiet intimacy of Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring; whales lying in vast, empty deserts; astronauts and albino royals photographed with the calm, formal presence of traditional studio portraits.
Despite the variety of these images, there is a clear thread running through them. Beel has always been drawn to texture and emotion, and those interests remain at the heart of Campanello’s work.
Freckled skin, windblown hair, worn surfaces, cracked earth, and dramatic light appear again and again. Even in completely imagined scenes, there is still the eye of a photographer searching for a particular kind of light, atmosphere, or human expression.
That connection between the two identities is what makes the work especially interesting. Walter Campanello may work with artificial intelligence and digital tools, but the images still carry the sensibility of Wout Beel the photographer.
The work has already gained international attention, including an AI Master Award in the Conceptual & Fine Art category and a feature as an IIIL Cover Artist.
Through Campanello, Beel is continuing to explore the increasingly blurred line between photography and fabrication, reality and imagination, and the image we capture versus the image we create.
Ultimately, his work asks us to slow down and look again, and perhaps to question how much of what we see is real, and how much is invented.
