MY PROCESS

For artist Spektrarium, the creative process is as much about discovery as it is about making. With a background in art and VFX, and a longstanding interest in character design, anatomy, proportion, lighting and colour, the project has grown into an evolving space for visual experimentation.

  • “I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember,” Spektrarium explains. After studying art at college, a career in VFX followed, but drawing and image-making remained a constant. Over time, those interests found a new outlet in what began simply as a project name: Spektrarium.
  • What started as a name gradually became a creative identity, a place to explore ideas without being restricted to a particular style, subject or medium.

  • The work is deliberately varied. Some images are closely connected to Spektrarium’s own ideas, while others begin with something discovered along the way and are transformed through experimentation, editing and selection. The process can sometimes feel closer to art direction or curation than traditional image-making: finding an idea with potential, pushing it further, refining it and deciding what works.

  • The technology is an important part of that process, but it is only the starting point. Most images begin in Midjourney, while others develop from personal sketches and rough scribbles through Krea. From there, the work moves into Photoshop, with nanoBanana used where necessary for anatomical corrections, followed by extensive cleanup, refinement and colour work. Magnific AI is also used for upscaling.
  • For Spektrarium, however, the most interesting part often begins after the initial image has been created. Lighting, colour, values, anatomy and proportion are carefully considered, with the aim of bringing all the elements together into something that feels coherent and intentional.
  • At the moment, the project is particularly focused on character and costume design, but its ambitions are much broader. Spektrarium is gradually developing towards an eclectic visual magazine, one that can move between cultures and periods of human history, contemporary life, imagined futures and distant or entirely fictional worlds.
  • There is also the possibility of expanding beyond the characters themselves, introducing environments and developing deeper stories and worlds around them.
  • That openness is an important part of Spektrarium. There is no single destination or fixed visual language. The name itself reflects that idea, a broad spectrum of subjects, influences and possibilities.

  • The project is still in its early stages, and perhaps that is part of its appeal. Rather than having everything mapped out, Spektrarium is being allowed to evolve naturally, an ongoing experiment in making, discovering and following ideas wherever they happen to lead.
