Artist: Kiiko Nakahara - 4me4you

4me4you features "The Trace of Coloured Scents”.

ABOUT ME

When 4me4you visited IN-STORE openGALLERY in 2013, we discovered IROKA: The Trace of Coloured Scents, an exhibition by Kiiko Nakahara that offered a thoughtful reflection on beauty, memory, and the passage of time. As part of our archive series, we look back at this memorable showcase and the artist behind it.”.

MY PROCESS

At the heart of IROKA is a conversation between past and present. Nakahara's work draws on traditional values while embracing a contemporary perspective, creating pieces that feel both timeless and deeply personal. Describing herself as a Bijutsu-Ka, an artist dedicated to the pursuit of beauty, she has spent more than six decades exploring this theme through her art.

Much of Nakahara’s inspiration comes from the women she has admired since childhood. Their strength, elegance, and quiet resilience continue to influence her work today, giving her paintings a sense of tenderness and emotional depth.

For Nakahara, painting is far more than a creative practice; it is a way of understanding herself and expressing emotions that are often difficult to put into words. Speaking about her work, she said:

“Painting is the sole process of internal communication and it has brought me a range of emotions that encompass joy, pain and release. A piece of art should be defined or judged by how the artist could fill in the gap between concept and works.”

Through IROKA, visitors were invited into that personal journey, one shaped by colour, emotion, and experience.

The exhibition offered a glimpse into an artist whose lifelong dedication to beauty continues to resonate through every brushstroke.
