ABOUT ME

4me4you recently visited Rhodes Contemporary Gallery, where works by Kevin Sabo were on view.

MY PROCESS

Working within a restrained palette of black and cream, punctuated by deliberate flashes of colour, Sabo pushes proportion to the edge of theatricality. Figures tilt, elongate, and swell, charged with an almost electric intensity.

  • Drawing on the heightened codes of drag, femininity amplified beyond naturalism, poised between restraint and bold display, his characters feel both archetypal and deeply personal.

  • Familiar motifs such as the seductress, the pop icon, manicured poodles, fish bowls, and caged birds reappear throughout, reimagined with a blend of allure and subtle satire.

  • Despite their elastic, almost cartoon-like quality, these figures are rendered with careful precision in graphite. Influences from mid-century stylisation and twentieth-century expressionism shape Sabo’s balance between exaggeration and sensitivity.

  • “I’m interested in that intersection — playful and tender at the same time. The character isn’t separate from me, even as a queer man. She’s not a literal parallel — it’s about energy. There’s fantasy involved, like drag. I’m inventing allure through proportion and leaving the door open for connection.”

  • Sabo’s process reflects the same tension present in his imagery. Loose sketches are drawn directly onto canvas, then washed with thin, airy layers before being worked over in graphite.

  • The surface is smeared horizontally with matte medium, dragging the image toward near-erasure. Once dry, sharp planes of dark and cream are reintroduced, carving clarity out of haze. The result is a surface that shifts between control and spontaneity,  buoyant, uncanny, and quietly defiant.
