4me4you had the pleasure of visiting The Coningsby Gallery to experience Little Me, an enchanting exhibition by renowned sculptor Guy Reid.
Guy Reid’s creative process combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary reference. Working from both live models and photographs, he produces sculptures that are sometimes partially painted and sometimes left in the natural warmth of the lime wood.
This blending of historical technique with photographic precision is central to Reid’s originality: while his carvings draw inspiration from European Gothic and early Renaissance sculpture, the photographic element allows an uncanny realism that medieval artisans could not achieve.
Reid began his formal training in classical carving and restoration in 1985, later working at the world-renowned Spink workshop.
There, he contributed to projects for prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Getty Museum in California, Harewood House, and The Sir John Soane Museum in London.
Now based in the tranquil countryside south of Toulouse, Reid’s work continues to be shaped by silence, space, time, rhythm, and discipline. His reputation as an accomplished sculptor was solidified in the 1990s, with his first solo show in the summer of 1999 receiving critical acclaim.
