4me4you recently visited Albion Jeune to experience FOOL, a solo exhibition by Copenhagen-born artist Esben Weile Kjær (b. 1992).
This presentation brings together five intricate stained-glass works alongside a monumental inflatable sculpture, each piece exploring the intersection of medieval traditions with contemporary themes of desire, identity, and cultural obsession.
Kjær’s new stained-glass works invite the viewer into a dreamlike reverie, drawing attention to the intricate interplay of composition and materiality.
These pieces invite deep reflection, encouraging viewers to lose themselves in the layers of fantasy and symbolism, where they may even see themselves reflected within the scenes. Through this tactile engagement with the glass, Kjær blurs the line between the viewer’s reality and the imagined world.
In contrast, the exhibition also features a striking inflatable dragon sculpture, which captivates with its velvet surface that reflects and scatters light like a photographer’s reflector. This otherworldly form, with its surreal texture, creates a hallucinatory effect, heightening spatial awareness and offering a deeply sensorial experience.
With this work, Kjær reinterprets the medieval symbol of the dragon, bringing it into the digital age. The dragon becomes a metaphor for the technological monster that dominates our contemporary world—the ever-looming digital revolution.
Ultimately, the inflatable dragon serves as a commentary on the disorienting and illusory nature of digital self-representations. Despite their surface-level allure, these digital identities remain perpetually in search of something unattainable, something fantastical and unreal.
Through FOOL, Kjær examines how ancient motifs still hold relevance in today’s culture, urging us to question our relationship with the digital landscape and the fantasies it creates.
