4me4you recently had the pleasure of visiting Gillian Jason Gallery, where artist Síomha Harrington was featured in their latest group showcase.
Harrington’s works delve into the performativity of femininity, exploring the complex relationship between women and the often internalised male gaze.
Through her paintings, she portrays figures that not only confront but also subvert their own objectification.
Her work critically examines societal structures that dictate how women are seen and how they see themselves. Using recurring motifs of masquerade and performance, Harrington addresses internalised misogyny and self-image, revealing the tension between autonomy and external expectations.
In her compositions, Harrington positions the viewer as an active participant in the power dynamics of the artwork. Her subjects do not passively accept being observed; instead, they actively return the gaze, challenging traditional dynamics of looking and disrupting voyeuristic tendencies
